The most under-utilized direction in current virtual reality (VR) content is up, so that’s where we went with our first real video. We filmed full spherical 360 in various locations where it is pleasant to lie on your back and look at the sky, or look in any other direction if you wish.

Emily narrates as we go on an unusual journey, blending the real and the virtual…

VORTEX http://vrplayer.tv/archives/459 http://vrplayer.tv/archives/459#comments Sun, 20 Jul 2014 01:38:04 +0000 aaronbradbury http://vrplayer.tv/?p=459 VORTEX  is an ephemeral sculpture, driven by geometric soundscapes.

Created by Aaron Bradbury
Music by Flavio Martines
5.1 Surround Mix by Flavio Martines at Refinaria Estudios
3D Sound Mixed by Silvio Kuehm & Rene Rodigast at Fraunhofer IDMT

VORTEX is mastered at 8k, 60fps, in stereoscopic fulldome and has 3D spatial sound. No venue currently exists that can actually play all of these elements together and the Rift version is dramatically reduced from the original masters.

Check out the VORTEX blog for concept art, thought processes and general babbling that went into the production.

Please view with the VRPlayer and set the media as over/under sphere projection.

Immersiveness was the key point in our mind when developing the system. We don’t want to observe another world at a distance even with a HMD, we want to “be there”. Unlike many other 360 systems, we designed our own lens to capture these 3D video that don’t need a 2-3 meters no-filming radius. We can stitch objects that are very close to the lens. This feature enabled our system can be fused into the real world at the normal person’s perspective, and so the viewer can feel as if they were interacting in the virtual scene. Closing one of your eye can see the video in 2D, but you will soon notice the 3D is making a huge difference in bringing the scene to life. There may be still some minor error in the picture, but the among should be minimal as we use 50% fewer camera to shot the scenes.

We capture sound from all directions as well, and shall publish the directional sound version as soon as the player support it.

Immersive 3D Walkthrough video, Ocean Park http://vrplayer.tv/archives/480 http://vrplayer.tv/archives/480#comments Fri, 30 May 2014 13:46:23 +0000 izugar3d http://vrplayer.tv/?p=480 This is another test of our dual fisheye setup, I use my lovely car instead of a cockpit. The shooting time was not perfect as the sun went directly to the lenses, anyway it’s good for demonstrating the workflow. Please downlaod the 4K version at youtube:

VRPlayer having trouble in reading my original video at 2800×2800@48fps. The app simply quited when it was played with VLC or DirectShow. I have to bring it down to 24 fps before I can see it properly.

Immersive 3D Walkthrough video, without stitching! http://vrplayer.tv/archives/476 http://vrplayer.tv/archives/476#comments Thu, 29 May 2014 16:48:11 +0000 izugar3d http://vrplayer.tv/?p=476 This video was taken with a pair of full circular fisheye lens on Gopro. I have to wrap the fisheye to equirectangular format in PTGUI before it can be displayed well in VRPlayer with the dome-projection mode. Anyway adding a cockpit image to fill the 2nd half sounds an interesting idea, so please enjoy the movie in the sphere mode as usual :) pls view the youtube in 4K mode, or download the 2560p version here

p.s. We tried many fish lens on the market, but the lens quality at the fringe were usually too bad for a nice stitching. We made our purpose-built lens for stitching 3D360 video, and this handy dual fisheye setup soon become a gear in my bag. Interested parties can feel free to reach me for a trial.
